A few academies in Bangkok take complete beginners. Fat Cat Chess Academy in Khlong San teaches beginners, children and adults alike, in group classes, with private and online lessons too, and books places through LINE. CapyChess in Prawet teaches children and adults from the first moves and lets anyone drop in for free play on Friday to Sunday afternoons, which makes it an easy place to practise between lessons.

JCA Chess School, also in Prawet, offers private, group and online lessons for beginners, school programmes and holiday camps, and the Australian International School has opened a chess academy at Mille Malle on Sukhumvit that welcomes players of all levels. Before booking, ask how the groups are split by level and age, and whether a first class can be a trial.
